Zang Tumb Tumb is a sound poem and concrete poem written by Filippo Tommaso Marinetti, an Italian futurist. It is an account of the Battle of Adrianople, which he witnessed as a reporter for L’Intransigeant. The poem uses Parole in libertà, (words in freedom) -creative typography- and other poetic impressions of the events of the battle, including the sounds of gunfire and explosions. The work is now seen as a seminal work of modernist art, and an enormous influence on the emerging culture of European avant-garde print.
Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA) is a joint project of NASA and the German Aerospace Center (DLR) for the construction and maintenance of an airborne observatory. SOFIA is based on a Boeing 747SP wide-body aircraft that has been modified with a large door in the aft fuselage that can be opened in flight to allow a 2.5 meter diameter reflecting telescope access to the sky. This telescope is designed for infrared astronomy observations at altitudes of about 12 km in the stratosphere. The water vapor in the Earth’s atmosphere blocks some infrared wavelengths from reaching the ground, but SOFIA’s flight capability allows it to rise above almost all of the water vapor in the Earth’s atmosphere. The aircraft can also travel to almost any point on the Earth’s surface, allowing observation from the northern and southern hemispheres.
The thrifty phenotype hypothesis says that reduced fetal growth is strongly associated with a number of chronic conditions later in life. This increased susceptibility results from adaptations made by the fetus in an environment limited in its supply of nutrients. These chronic conditions include coronary heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and hypertension. Individuals with a thrifty phenotype will have “a smaller body size, a lowered metabolic rate and a reduced level of behavioural activity… adaptations to an environment that is chronically short of food”. Those with a thrifty phenotype who actually develop in an affluent environment may be more prone to metabolic disorders, such as obesity and type II diabetes, whereas those who have received a positive maternal forecast will be adapted to good conditions and therefore better able to cope with rich diets.
Blue Whale of Catoosa is a waterfront structure, located just east of the town of Catoosa, Oklahoma, and it has become one of the most recognizable attractions on old Route 66. The Blue Whale and its pond became a favored swimming hole for both locals and travelers along Route 66 alike. Originally, the pond surrounding the massive Blue Whale was spring fed and intended only for family use. However, as many locals began to come to enjoy its waters, Davis brought in tons of sand, built picnic tables, hired life guards, and opened it to the public.
South Atlantic Anomaly (SAA) refers to the area where the Earth’s inner Van Allen radiation belt comes closest to the Earth’s surface. This leads to an increased flux of energetic particles in this region and exposes orbiting satellites to higher than usual levels of radiation. Current literature suggests that a slow weakening of the geomagnetic field is one of several causes for the changes in the borders of the SAA since its discovery. Predictions estimate that by 2240 the SAA may cover approximately half of the southern hemisphere.
Energy Catalyzer is an apparatus built by inventor Andrea Rossi with support from his scientific consultant, physicist and emeritus professor Sergio Focardi. The 2008 patent application claims “a method and apparatus for carrying out nickel and hydrogen exothermal reactions,” with production of copper. Although the patent cites previous works on cold fusion, one statement by Rossi asserted that it is not cold fusion, but rather LENR, Low-Energy Nuclear Reaction. The device has not yet been independently verified. Several demonstrations were given to invited guests. None of these was set up to provide scientific evidence.
