Watts Mortuary Chapel is a Gothic Revival chapel and mortuary located in the village of Compton in Surrey. It was constructed between 1896 and 1898 with virtually every village resident involved. Essentially circular, from the outside it has the look of a Roman Italianate Chapel; local villagers were invited to decorate the chapel under her guidance, resulting in an interior which is a merger of Angels and Arthurian Legend meets Edward Burne-Jones. Each member of Mary’s evening class, led by Louis Deuchars, had a separate job, with 74 Compton villagers taking part.
Skylon is a design for an unpiloted spaceplane by the British company Reaction Engines Limited. It uses a combined-cycle, air-breathing rocket engine to reach orbit in a single stage. A fleet of vehicles is envisaged; the design is aiming for re-usability up to 200 times. In paper studies, the costs per kilogram of payload are hoped to be lowered from the current £15,000/kg to £650/kg (as of 2011), including the costs of research and development (R&D), with costs expected to fall much more over time after the initial expenditures have amortised.
Ver Sacrum was the official magazine of the Vienna Secession. In the United Kingdom, the Belle Époque overlapped with the late Victorian era and the Edwardian era.
Nemean Games were one of the four Panhellenic Games of Ancient Greece, and were held at Nemea every two years (or every third). The games were at first of a warlike character, and only warriors and their sons were allowed to take part in them; subsequently, however, they were thrown open to all the Greeks. The games took place in a grove between Cleonae and Phlius. The various games, according to Apollodorus, were horse-racing, running in armour in the stadium, wrestling, chariot racing and discus, boxing, spear-throwing and archery, to which we may add musical contests.
Glasgow School was a circle of influential modern artists and designers who began to coalesce in Glasgow, Scotland in the 1870s, and flourished from the 1890s to sometime around 1910. Representative groups were: The Four (also known as the Spook School), the Glasgow Girls and the Glasgow Boys. They were responsible for creating the distinctive Glasgow Style.
